Storm Prep

Well as you maybe following the storm on the news it looks like the East Coast of Florida will be hit the most. But keep in mind that we over here will still get some wind and rain. Since we have some time to prepare. Take the note of the following:

NEVER RUN A GENERATOR IN YOUR HOME OR GARAGE!

Remove or tie down any lawn furniture, grills and other items that could become a flying object.

Check your windows for cracks and remove the screens.

Check the drains around the property whether its a pool drain, rain gutter etc. This can cause flooding rapidly.

Make sure all portable devices are fully charged.

Have atleast 3/4 tank of fuel in your vehicles.

NEVER RUN A GENERATOR IN YOUR HOME OR GARAGE!

Have ice and plenty of it. Use it for coolers and if the power goes out, place all your condiments and medicine that needs to be refrigerated in the ice.

Lastly, its gonna be a long one. So get some steaks, chops and whatever. Watch some movies and chill. Being home may get boring but at-least your safe.

Happy Birthday To USA

Good Day and Happy Birthday to our Nation. We celebrate today a very important part of history. The Independence from the British Empire on 04 July 1776.  However, did you know that it was declared by the Congress on July 2nd.When the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain’s rule. And today is the National Day of the USA..

Few other tidbits about today. A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.  And the current 50 star flag has been in use since 04 July 1960.

In Closing, We wanted to wish you and your family a Great, Safe and Happy 4th of July. Enjoy the day as you wish.

Memorial Day

We want to say please take a moment of silence to remember those who gave all.  Today is a day to reflect on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.  In every war and conflict we have lost many of military members. Today is their day. Remember, Memorial Day is NOT Veterans Day! Thank You!

Texting & Driving

I wanted to do a different post and share with people that follow my blog. May is motorcycle awareness month, nationally. I am advocate about riding motorcycles. (Yes I have a social life) The main reason of this blog is about safety and many of my blogs are either protecting your home in some way or securing it. Well today’s blog is about security. Not to you, but to other people on the road. Every day we are in the hustle and bustle of business, family, entertainment, or just the fact when can I get a free moment to myself.   This blog may shock you in the end but it will leave you something to think about. So let’s begin.

Our daily morning activities for a lot of people start with one of three things. Getting the children ready for school or their daily activities. Checking emails and social media pages such as “Facebook” and lastly preparing ourselves ready for work. This is true. Believe me in this. (Check yourself tomorrow.)  For some may not have kids it changes a bit, I get it.  Now, we are heading out the door got the clients or boss on phone wondering whats going on about the deadlines or projects. Dropping off the kids, (you on the phone), maybe the friend text you about hey, lets get together tomorrow evening for dinner or drinks. And yes the last, you have a relative still at the house. Text you where is the —- whatever..  Now again this blog is not about what you do or to scare you..But in the last 45 minutes you have probably been distracted maybe 3 times from the road.  This is what I want you think about.

How many times you been on cellular device going to work, dropping the kids off or you got your cell phone tracking the distance when you run. I’m not here to say disband the phone. We use it for security and music. My point is are you on the phone from just a walk to a drive where you are distracted.? There is a point you need to say stop and be your self.  Back when cellphones cost like $2.00 per minute we rarely used them. There was no smart phones nor texting. We waited til we were able to sit and talk without distractions.  So lets take the pledge. For the entire month of May no texting and driving. Take the pledge with me and in June lets see how you did.

In conclusion. Do you want to be the one that was one the phone and did not see some one. And lastly, if this blog is not a mind memory of people that are lost then do a re-read.. I want to thank my great friend, Steve  Ammerman for contributions to this blog.

Concrete Cracks

Today’s blog is about cracks in the driveway, sidewalk and the garage. While you may see them in the concrete and very light and small to a gap that is noticeable. I wanted to share today why its important to repair them other then appearance. So lets begin.

While doing inspections we come across typical concrete cracks to the concrete has a sunk or is cracked due to many reasons.  Some cracks fall into one or more of several categories: 1) plastic shrinkage 2) settlement 3) drying shrinkage 4)chemical 5) corrosion and 6) overload.  Concrete will fail just like anything else. Some cracks appear shortly after the pour and some take many years.  A lot of sidewalks for homes are poured at 3500 psi. Yes you will see 4000 and 5000 psi. Some driveways and commercial applications vary. But lets not get too technical. We are not trying to develop the science on concrete.

The biggest part is when you see cracks remember moisture will get in. No matter if its the driveway, garage or back patio. This you want to avoid. Main reason is that once moisture enters the cracks the concrete will absorb it and start to deteriorate. A lot folks in the North East have had snow and rain. This is not good with cracks. The repair process can be a small job up to replacing the area. Small jobs may just require you on a Saturday cutting out the crack and filling it with a repair compound. Some maybe a bit more extensive. Additionally, you may see concrete caulk. I am not a fan of this product. One appearance wise it looks tacky. Two lets think about it. You gonna caulk your driveway? Do the task correctly so your home is prestige.

In closing when we see the concrete cracks and they look jagged or shark tooth style. They are the ones to worry about. This is true for concrete block as we see the cracks there too. Normally something has made that area to heave or sink.  Thank you for following us today. If you have more questions about concrete cracks, feel free to call us anytime at 352-322-2700 or visit us at; www.emeraldinspectionservice.com

Home Energy Score Assessor

Good Day Everyone! Yes we have a Monday Blog.. This past weekend we were attending The Home Energy Score Assessor class. By the end of the week we will have our certification from Department of Energy Home Score program, as Assessor. What is that, do you need it and why do you want it. So lets begin.

The Home Energy Score program is like a vehicles miles per gallon ratio. It allows you to compare your energy use that you use to other homes in the area and nationwide. The process starts with a Home Energy Inspector to do a brief walk-thru to gather data from different elements of your home during the inspection. The inspection process normally takes about a half an hour. The inspection is not to open wall cavities or take apart certain elements. Its gathering data for the program to compare your energy use and how to save you money!  Now keep in mind some homes have been upgraded and are older and score well. Some are newer and score low. Even with today’s specifications.  Not every home is alike and every home will not score the same.

So to take part of this new program to see how your home scores call us. We are doing promotional rates on this new program. The report is normally delivered that day and we will go over the report with you so you know how your home scored. We will gladly perform this type of inspection in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Polk, Sumter, Pasco, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota Florida counties. Lastly we are the only one in this area that are certified by the DOE to do this type of inspection. 352-322-2700 or info@emeraldinspectionservice.com

Happy Easter

I want to take this time and wish everyone of our followers a Very Happy Easter Holiday. Also wanted to share few tid bits about the Easter Holiday. Some stuff that is not known much about Easter. So lets begin.

The Easter date goes back to circa 30 AD. The holiday is celebrated as Holy Week and really starts with Maundy Thursday when the last supper took place. Then Good Friday the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Then Easter Sunday. The resurrection of Jesus.  The holiday is a world wide holiday and in many countries people are off and celebrate Good Friday and/or Easter Monday too.  The holiday is tied to many religious events too.

Now for a few unknown tidbits. For example the Astronomical and Gregorian Easter is the same date. The Julian calendar date is actually 08 April this year. All 3 wont be the same date until 2025.  The Easter Bunny made its way to the US in the 18th century. Its believed to originated in Europe, where it was actually the Easter Hare. Pysanka is the name of painting eggs.    The idea of the Easter Bunny giving candy and eggs originated in Germany. There is plenty more out there but wanted to share of few.

So in closing. Happy Easter from Emerald Inspection Service. We will be open on Monday! 352-322-2700
